From the windows of his small cottage on the cliffs, Elias could hear it breathing through the night. Some evenings it whispered against the rocks below like a secret too old to remember. Other nights it roared with such force that the glass rattled in its frames and sleep became impossible. For most of his life, Elias believed the sea was trying to tell him something. When he was a child, he would sit on the edge of the cliff with his grandfather and watch the waves crash against the dark stone. His grandfather rarely spoke, but when he did, every word seemed to carry the weight of years. “People think the sea is wild,” he once said. “But it follows rules. The tides return.
